ACES restaurant recommendations for South Lake Tahoe

If you’re headed for South Lake Tahoe and Stateline for some snow sports and gaming, here’s a few restaurants that ACES can recommend from first-hand experience.

The big casinos all offer fine dining, but you can skip that and try Jimmy’s Restaurant at the Landing Resort and Spa. The dining room, the patio and the rooftop bar all look out at Lake Tahoe with the beach right across the street. The cuisine originally had a Greek-emphasis, but the founder sold the business and the new chef has diversified the offerings while maintaining the Greek favorites. After finishing a day of skiing at the Heavenly Resort, stroll across the street for après ski at the Himmel Haus. It’s a lively bar and dining scene with plenty of German and Belgian beers on tap plus a menu with German favorites such as wursts (sausages), schnitzels, sauerbraten, spaetzle and kaze spaetzle (German mac and cheese made with smoked gouda, swiss cheese and aged white cheddar). The portions are huge, so save room for the Belgian fries and the kaze spaetzle.

In the mood for Italian (there are several options), but locals directed us to Primo’s located in the back of a strip center near the Y.What a delight. The quality of the food rivaled that of our Italian favorites in the Tri-Valley. Sauces, desserts and pasta are all made in-house daily and the prices are quite reasonable, particularly considering the quality. Reservation sare definitely recommended. If you’re heading over Echo Summit for a day at Sierra-at-Tahoe, leave early enough to grab breakfast at the Downtown Café in Meyers. Breakfast offerings include pancakes, waffles and French toast as well as a full range of egg dishes, including Eggs Benedict and three-egg omelets. We enjoyed three different egg dishes and coffee and put it on our list to return. We’re long-time fans of the Red Hut Cafes and the Downtown Café hits that standard.
