Former PGA touring pros and Northern California products, Bobby Clampett and Roger Maltbie will join another Northern Californian, John Abendroth of Hooked on Golf, Â at a town-hall style benefit for the Junior Golf Association of Northern California Jan. 15 at the Carmel Valley Ranch.
The event starts with hosted heavy appetizers and a no-host bar from 6-7 p.m. It will be followed by the conversation between Abendroth, Clampett and Maltbie from 7-8 p.m. The evening will conclude with an open question-and-answer session with the audience.
All three participants grew up in Northern California. Clampett got his first job and played golf at nearby Quail Lodge, becoming the top ranked amateur in the world. He then went on to the PGA Tour for 15 years before transitioning to the CBS TV broadcasts. He returned to the PGA Tour Champions and doubled the money in five seasons that he won in 15 years on the regular tour. Now, he is focused on his Impact Zone Golf schools.
Maltbie grew up in San Jose and played at San Jose State. He had 55 top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour and won five official tour events between 1975 and 1985, including back-to-back wins in his first full year. His best finish in a major was T4 at the 1987 Masters Tournament. Since 1991, Maltbie has worked as an on-course reporter and analyst for NBC Sports. In this role, he has become well known as a good-natured figure with his signature element as a “golf whisperer”, necessitated by the fact that Maltbie generally stands much closer to the green than other on-course reporters.
Abendroth is a native San Franciscan, former PGA Tour player, PGA Member and co-founder a cofounder of Celtic Golf Management in San Francisco. John has been co-host of Hooked on Golf since 1994 as heard on KNBR-680 am www.hookedongolf.com. As an advocate for junior golf, John was co-chairman of the San Francisco Junior Golf Championship for 17 years and has operated several other junior golf events. In 2005 he co-founded the Hooked on Golf Foundation to benefit junior golf and helped incubate what is now known as Youth On Course.
Admission to the “Evening with Bobby and Roger—hosted by John Abendroth” is $50. All proceeds will go to the 47-year-old junior golf association. The association conducts professionally run tournaments on some of Northern California’s best golf courses to give junior golfers opportunities to earn college scholarship and perhaps someday compete on the professional tours.
