Cal Bears Head to OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational

California men’s golf is back in action this weekend as they will compete at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational September 17-19. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Illinois.

The field will consist of 15 teams including six ranked in the top-10 by Golfstat: top-ranked Oklahoma State, No. 3 Pepperdine, No. 4 Florida State, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 6 Illinois and No. 8 North Carolina. Both Texas (No. 11) and Arizona (No. 19) are ranked in the top 20.

Four of the five Bears heading to Olympia Fields scored at last weekend’s Maui Jim Intercollegiate. Redshirt sophomore Costas Panay was Cal’s top-finisher, tying for 24th which was his best performance as a Bear. His best score came in the second round when he shot five under par (65) in a round which included five birdies and an eagle. He collected two birdies over the three rounds and was one of just four players in the 90-player field to reach that total. Both redshirt freshmen Ethan Chung and Tony Chen finished five strokes behind Panay, tying for 52nd as a result. Cal’s final scorer was sophomore Sampson Zheng whose 211 (+1) strokes landed him in a tie for 58th. Freshman Simon Kwon will be competing in his first tournament as a Golden Bear this weekend. The 5-foot-11 Salt Lake City native graduated from Skyline College in the spring of 2021 before heading to Berkeley. Kwon was a member of the Utah High School All-State First Team each of the last four years and was named the Utah Junior Golf Association Player of the Year in 2020. Click here for his full bio.
