Cal Men’s Golf – Tilly, Zheng Tied for 12th Ahead of Final Round

With two rounds complete at Isleworth Golf & Country Club, the Golden Bears are led by senior Finigan Tilly and sophomore Sampson Zheng who are both tied for 12th with 143 (-1) strokes with one round remaining. As a team, Cal dropped to 10th-place following a combined score of 298 (+10) on Monday.

Zheng’s 72 (E) strokes on Tuesday were the lowest of any Bear in the second round and one stroke over his first round total of 71. The Nagoya, Japan native moved up in the standings to a tie for 12th after beginning the day tied for 13th. With five birdies in the second round, he is now tied with Tilly for Cal’s most birdies so far this tournament (seven). Meanwhile, Tilly produced a relatively clean card on Tuesday with three bogeys and two birdies while shooting three more strokes than Monday’s total (73, +1).

Freshman Tony Chen is currently three strokes behind the Bears’ leaders with combined score of 147 (+3). Chen shot a 76 (+4) in Tuesday’s second round. Sophomore Aaron Du is in Cal’s final scoring position after improving three strokes over Monday’s total, carding a 77 (+5) today. He is now tied for 66th with 157 strokes (+13).

The Bears will enter Wednesday’s final round in 10th-place, but a good performance could propel the team much higher in the standings; just 11 strokes separate the Bears from South Carolina in fifth place and they are only eight behind LSU in sixth.

The final round will get underway tomorrow morning at 8am ET. The first Bear to tee off will be redshirt senior Kyle Maspat at 8:25am ET. Cal will be paired with players from Minnesota (11th) and SMU (12th). Live stats can be found stats here.
