California will make its third consecutive NCAA Men’s Golf Regional appearance and 26th in program history as it earned an at-large bid to the 2025 Reno (Nevada) Regional on Wednesday. The Golden Bears will be the ninth seed in the 14-team, 54-hole regional, hosted by the University of Nevada at Montreux Golf & Country Club on May 12-14.
The low five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team at each of the six NCAA Regional sites will advance to a field of 30 teams and six additional individuals that will play in the NCAA Championships at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad on May 23-28.
“One of our team goals at the start of the year was to compete for a NCAA Championship,” said first-year Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Michael Wilson, who helped the Bears win their lone NCAA Championship in 2004 as a student-athlete. “This is a step toward that goal during a year where we’ve had a roster of largely unproven players. These guys have worked and competed hard all year and we are trending in the right direction. We’re excited for the opportunity.
“Personally, this is one of my favorite tournaments of the year. Regardless of what you have done or achieved throughout the regular season, everyone will have to earn their spot in the NCAA Championship. Essentially everyone goes back to zero. We look forward to this opportunity to tee it up in Reno and compete hard to get to the NCAA Championship.”
The Bears have made 25 previous NCAA Regional appearances dating back to 1990, including a stretch of 10 consecutive years from 2007-16. Their current streak of three straight appearances dating back to 2023 is tied for the third-longest stretch in program history. Cal has won two NCAA Regionals – in back-to-back years in 2012 and 2013 – while alumnus Michael Weaver (2009-14) is the program’s only NCAA Regional individual winner, having earned co-medalist honors in 2013.
Cal has advanced to the NCAA Championships 15 times in program history, most recently last year when it placed 19th in Carlsbad.
The Bears are ranked 53rd nationally (Scoreboard) and are coming off a run to the ACC Championship quarterfinals last week in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Cal entered the conference tournament as the No. 12 seed before advancing to match play as the sixth seed with a 2-under-par 862 (287-284-291) across three rounds of stroke play. Cal owns an 83-76-2 record in the 2024-25 season and amassed seventh top-10 finishes, as well as four finishes of fourth or better.
Tee times, pairings and further information about the Reno Regional will be released at a later date.
