the 74th Western Intercollegiate presented by TopGolf men’s golf tournament team and individual leaderboards changed heading into the April 14 final round. Pepperdine rode the wave of its depth to the top of the team leaderboard and Brigham Young’s Carson Lundell turned in a four-under par 66 to grab the top spot in the 92-player field.
Pepperdine posted a two-under par 348 second-round team score in the 6-player, score-5 format and a 702 total to move past first round leader Washington, now at 708 with 18 holes to go. Joe Highsmith led the way with a 66 and Dylan Menante added a 67 to lead the Pepperdine charge.
Stanford moved from fourth to third and is at 710. Brigham Young at 711 and California at 713 complete the top five teams.
Host San Jose State slipped from fifth place to ninth in the 13-team tournament at 738.
Lundell’s round consisted of a birdie on the opening hole of the par 70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club and a fiery three-hole stretch from #8 through #10 going birdie-eagle-birdie going from one-under to five-under par. At 134, Lundell has a four-stroke lead over Stanford’s Karl Viilips and Pepperdine’s Highsmith and Manke at 138. Vilips had the low round of the day with a 65 – the best individual round of the tournament.
First-round leaders Finigan Tilly of Cal and Justin Ngan of Hawaii were unable to match or break par in the second round. Tilly posted a 73 and is even par at 140 tied for ninth place. Ngan turned in a 76 and is at 143.
