Walter Chun, who has served as Cal’s Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf for the past eight seasons, has been relieved of his duties, Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton announced Tuesday.

Previous to serving as head coach, Chun spent seven seasons as Cal’s associate head coach and five years before that as an assistant coach. He also played for the Golden Bears from 1997-2002 and was an administrative assistant for the program before joining the coaching staff.

“We’d like to thank Walter for his contributions to Cal as a head coach, assistant coach and student-athlete,” Knowlton said. “Walter always represented our department and University in the right way, but we felt it was necessary to move in a different direction at this time.”

Assistant coach Peter Ireland will serve as interim head coach. A national search for Chun’s permanent replacement will begin immediately.
