Cal Bears Place Second At Burns Intercollegiate

The California men’s golf team went on a tear in the final round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate on Saturday, carding a 17-under par 271 to climb out of seventh place and finish second at Ocean Course Hokuala.

The Golden Bears entered the final round at even-par but ended up finishing just three strokes off the lead. Arizona won the tournament at 20-under par. It was Cal’s fifth top-three finish in six tournaments played in the 2023-24 campaign.

Junior Tony Chen tied for the lowest individual score in the final round with an 8-under par 64 and finished in a tie for third place overall at 7-under, five shots off the lead. The third-round 64 tied an 18-hole course record and marked a new collegiate low for Chen. Cal had two other players register top-20 individual finishes – freshman Ethan Fang tied for eighth at 4-under par while senior Sampson Zheng was right behind at 3-under and tied for 14th. It was Fang’s second consecutive top-10 finish to start the spring season.
