California’s run at the 2025 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship ended Sunday with a 12-over-par 300 in the third round at Omni La Costa. The Golden Bears finished in 17th place overall at 20-over (289-295-300—884), narrowly missing the advancing cut line (+17) at the conclusion of 54 holes played.
Cal will still be represented in the final round of stroke play on Monday, however, as freshman Ziqin (Eric) Zhou finished among the top nine individuals not on an advancing team. Zhou – who is tied for 18th individually at even par (74-68-74—216) – will play the fourth round alongside eight other advancing individuals and the top 15 teams in the field, the latter of which are competing to determine the top eight teams for match-play competition.
The Bears started the third round in 10th place and hit the ground running early, collectively shooting 1-under across their first nine holes (holes 10-18) to climb as high as seventh on the leaderboard. But a devastating front-nine holes (1-9) saw Cal manage just two birdies compared to 20 bogeys en route to falling outside of the top 15.
Zhou will begin the fourth round trailing individual clubhouse leader Michael La Sasso (-11) of Ole Miss by 11 shots. His tee time will not be determined until Monday morning following a playoff between Georgia Tech and Wake Forest for the 15th spot on the team leaderboard.
The Bears entered the championship as the 29th seed in the 30-team field and were ranked 49th nationally; they finished ahead of 12 teams that were ranked ahead of them, including five top-25 squads. It was Cal’s 17th all-time appearance at the NCAA Championship.
