Cal Men’s Golf Places Eighth at Cabo Collegiate!

California men’s golf closed out its third tournament of the spring on Tuesday, placing eighth at the Cabo Collegiate. Sophomore Aaron Du led the Bears once again, tying for 24th after posting back-to-back rounds of 68 (-3) in his last two rounds. Overall, Du produced a score of 208 (-5) while Cal combined for 836 (-16), its lowest score of the year.

“I’m proud of the guys for showing grit and competing at a high level,” Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Walter Chun said. “We haven’t been able to post three good rounds, and we did that this week. We’re making progress, but we still have to keep pushing ourselves to get better.”

Du’s final round gave the Bears their third eagle of the tournament. The sophomore also amassed three birdies on Tuesday and a total of 10 during the tournament. Freshman Simon Kwon finished one stroke behind Du (209, -4), tying for 29th after offering scores of 70 (-1), 69 (-2) and 70 (-1).

Redshirt freshman Tony Chen entered his final round just outside of the top 10 (T12), but a difficult round on Tuesday saw the Shenzhen, China native shoot two over (73) despite birdying three of his final four holes. Chen tied for 31st with a score of 210 (-3). The Bears’ final scorer in Cabo was sophomore Sampson Zheng who placed 47th. Zheng produced decent first (72, +1) and second (68, -3) rounds, but a 74 (+3) in his final 18 holes elevated his score to 214 (+1). His 39 pars through 54 holes were tied for the second-most in the 78-player field.

Cal will next play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic March 7-8. The two-day, 54 hole-tournament will take place at the San Diego Country Club.
