California men’s golf enters the fall of 2021 with four tournaments on its slate, beginning with the Maui Jim Intercollegiate September 10-12 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
“It’s exciting to have a full season on the horizon for us,” Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Walter Chun said. “We’ll play some of the best courses in the country against the best fields in college golf. We can’t wait!”
Cal will see action at three other events throughout September and October. Their second tournament (OFCC/Fighting Illini) will take place at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois September 17-19, followed by the Hamptons Intercollegiate Oct. 4-5 (Maidstone Club – East Hampton, New York) and the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational Oct. 17-19 (Isleworth Golf & Country Club – Windermere, Florida).
The Bears will be led this season by three seniors in Kyle Maspat, James Song and Finigan Tilly. Tilly, a graduate student who made his Cal debut in the spring of 2017, played in all six tournaments last season and tied for the second-lowest stroke average on the team (73.74). The San Carlos, California native finished in the top-10 at the Western Intercollegiate, tying for ninth with a final score of 211 (+1) and a low round of 67 (-3).
“I’m really looking forward to competing as a team this year because of the potential we are currently showing,” Tilly said. “I feel as if we have matured the right way over the summer and I am excited to see the results this season. I’m going to enjoy my final year at Cal and I think keeping that in perspective will help me play better as well.”
The Bears also have youth on their side this year as the only other two players to compete in every tournament last spring were then-freshmen Aaron Du and Sampson Zheng. Du’s 73.32 stroke average last season was the lowest on the team and he ended the season on a high note, placing seventh at the Pac-12 Championship. Zheng’s best performance was also at the Pac-12 Championship where he finished tied for 28th with 287 (-1) strokes. He tied Tilly with a stroke average of 73.73. Cal also added four freshmen to the roster this season: Charlie Berridge, Ethan Chung, Simon Kwon and Papon Sawatyanon.
