After a successful start to the 2021-22 season, two San José State women’s golfers have been honored by the Mountain West for their performances during the month of September.
Senior Antonia Malate has been named the MW Women’s Golfer of the Month for September. She recorded two top-five finishes for the month and had a 71.50 stroke average for the six rounds played. Malate finished fourth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational with a six-under 210. She shot back-to-back three-under 69s in the first two rounds of the tournament. Malate followed that up as she tied for fifth at The Molly Collegiate Invitational with a three-over 219. She led the field in par-4 scoring at -1.
Lucia Lopez Ortega has been named the MW Freshman Women’s Golfer of the Month for September. She had a 74.17 stroke average after playing in her first two collegiate tournaments. She tied for 18th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitation at two-over 218, shooting a four-under 68 in the second round. Lopez Ortega tied for 20th at The Molly Collegiate Invitational.
The Spartan women’s golf team started the year with back-to-back second-place finishes (25-2-1). The team is back in action in two weeks at the Illini Women’s Invitational at Medinah, October 11-2, and at the Stanford Intercollegiate, October 15-17.
