Tanner Hughes, a member of the California golf team and a former Foothill High in Pleasanton standout, shot a final-round 4-under par 68 to propel him to a one-shot victory over 36-hole leader Daniel Connolly and Zach Smith at the 2017 Saguaro Amateur at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Arizona.
Hughes, Connolly, and Smith all hail from California. Hughes came to the 18th hole one-shot back and hit his approach shot to 9 feet, then sank the putt. Connolly missed his par-putt for the tie.
On the birdie at 18: “I knew it was close to win or tie but wasn’t too clued-in as I was taking it one shot at a time,” said Hughes about the birdie on the18th. “Based on where everyone was I knew the putt meant something, whether it was for the tie or the win.”
