SNOWPACK AT 113%; SOUTH TAHOE SKI RESORT’S EXTEND SEASON TO END OF APRIL

Last week several storms delivered 3-4 feet at South Lake Tahoe ski resorts setting up incredible spring skiing conditions and extending the season with Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort closing April 21 and Kirkwood Mountain Resort April 28.  March snowfall significantly boosted the California Department of Water Resources snowpack reading at Phillips Station, which was taken today, April 2, measuring at 113% of average for this date www.visitlaketahoe.com.
EVENTS ON THE SLOPES
 
Sierra-at-Tahoe welcomes back Boarding for Breast Cancer Love Your Peaks featuring a Pink Poker Run, tribune ride, raffle, and a silent auction to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer outreach, education and young survivor retreats, April 6. Vans Methodology features a banked slalom concept with new elements including a double-sided hip before the finish line, allowing riders to shave time off their runs by completing big-air tricks, April 13. Spots are limited and 100 percent of proceeds go to Chill Foundation, which inspires youth to overcome challenges through board sports. Indie folk rock artist, Havilah Plaster, performs at the Sierra Pub, April 7. Groove to upbeat electronic dance music from Crowd Surf League in the Plaza, April 14.
Kirkwood Mountain Resort is currently hosting the three-day Freeride World Qualifier challenger series which concludes April 3, as big mountain athletes compete on the legendary Cirque, the face of Thimble Peak that looms over Kirkwood which is closed to the general public and only opens for competitions. The annual Banked Slalom – a community favorite, a race down Snow Snake Gully between Chair 10 and 11 for the coveted bragging rights of being the fastest, returns April 6 and Kirkwood Slush Cup pond skim competition is April 13.
 
Heavenly Mountain Resort is hosting its iconic Pond Skim, April 7, as competitors dressed in outlandish costumes gather speed and ski or ride straight into a pond at the base of the World Cup/Base of Tram area. Many may be able to ski across, but if not, hilarious splash crashes result. Après Party/live music to follow at California Base Lodge.
OFF THE SLOPES
 
The Backcountry Film Festival at South Lake Brewing Company celebrates the rugged sport in a fun, community environment, April 9. Proceeds will support the Winter Wildlands Alliance, benefiting the local community, through conservation education and avalanche/safety programs.
The 22nd Annual Snowshoe Thompson Ski & Snowshoe Celebration returns to the Lake Tahoe Historical Society Museum, April 14, with raffle prizes, warm beverages, cookies, Snowshoe Thompson books and merchandise for sale.
State Park interpreters will be leading a Full Moon Snowshoe Tour, April 20, exploring the natural and cultural history around the Hellman-Ehrman estate at Sugar Pine Point State Park.
The South Lake Tahoe Earth Day Festival provides visitors and residents an opportunity to learn about Tahoe’s environment, preservation efforts and how to help protect the lake’s natural resources. This is a free, family-friendly event with booths, kids zones, live music, and food trucks at Lake Tahoe Community College, April 27.
Edgewood Tahoe hosts a new Taholistic Wellness Experience event with a full day of speakers, activities like Sound Healing and Ayurvedic workshops, healthy meals and more, April 27-28. Sunday includes a Bubbles and Balance vendor fair as well.

Tahoe Blue Event Center hosts comedian Nate Bargatze, April 4; Journey Super Nationals Cheer and Dance Championships, April 6-7; comedian Franco Escamilla, April 14; Blippi: The Wonderful World Tour, April 30 along with conference groups: Rural Roundup, April 10-12 and Society of Outdoor Recreation Professionals, May 6-9.
Harrah’s Lake Tahoe brings “The music of ABBA,” April 5; reggae band Steel Pulse, April 25, and comedian/author, David Sedaris, May 4 to the South Shore Room.
Valhalla at Tahoe brings Sky White Tiger – Live in Concert with Special Guest Robin Orr, April 20; and the Wild & Scenic Film Festival and Spring Bounty Dinner, April 22.
Live music abounds with Tuesday Nights Blues at Harrah’s; Latin Night every Thursdays at Bally’s; Sierra-at-Tahoe at McP’s Taphouse Grill on Thursdays; License to Chill Bar inside Margaritaville Thursdays – Saturdays; Fish Taco Fridays at Riva Grill; dueling pianos at Harveys Fridays and Saturdays; and Live DJs at Center Bar inside Golden Nugget, Fridays – Sundays; Après Ski Party Every Sunday with DJ spinning at Becket Tavern, and ongoing live music within the Heavenly Village.
