World Golf Hall of Fame member and three-time Masters Champion Phil Mickelson has committed to play in the Safeway Open presented by Chevron, October 4-8, 2017 at Napa Valley’s Silverado Resort and Spa.
This will be Phil’s second year in a row playing in the season-opening Safeway Open PGA TOUR event. In 2016, the popular Mickelson drew large crowds shooting four rounds in the 60s finishing at 14-under par.
“We are very excited to have Phil return to play in the Safeway Open again this year,” said Bob Miller, Chairman and CEO of Albertsons Companies, the parent company of Safeway. “He was absolutely terrific last year. Phil is a great ambassador for the game of golf and one of the most exciting players to watch. We are committed to making the Safeway Open the best experience on the PGA TOUR for the players, fans, sponsors and volunteers, while raising important dollars for those in need. Phil’s early commitment will help us.”
The event is in its second year with Safeway as the title sponsor and hosts many of the best golfers in the world, as they compete Thursday through Sunday, October 5-8 for a $6.2 million-dollar purse, with $1.116 million to the winner. In addition to Mickelson, last year’s field of 144 golfers included elite players such as Matt Kuchar, Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson and Paul Casey.
“I look forward to playing in the Safeway Open at Silverado again this year,” said Mickelson, a 42-time PGA TOUR winner. “Bob Miller and Safeway/Albertsons have been one of our best PGA TOUR sponsors for more than 27 years, and Amy and I always enjoy our time in Napa.”
Jeff Sanders, Lagardère Sports Executive Vice President of Golf Events said, “Fans around the world love Phil’s style of play and the way in which he engages with the people, making him the crowd favorite. We are thrilled that he is coming back to play the Safeway Open.”
The Safeway Open presented by Chevron and three-night Safeway Open Concert Series will provide fans with an authentic Napa experience, bringing together world-renowned local chefs and wineries, popular musicians and the world’s best golfers all on one stage. The event will again feature a concert series with three consecutive nights of music after golf, featuring Grammy Award-winning Weezer, multi-platinum singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw and a third act to be announced next week.
