SJSU’s Woman’s Golf Advances to Match Play at 2022 NCAA Champs, Oon Finishes Second

Natasha Andrea Oon made a clutch birdie putt on her final hole of the fourth round to secure a second-place individual finish and help the San José State women’s golf team advance to match play at the 2022 NCAA Championships Tuesday morning at the Grayhawk Golf Club.

  • Oon needed her birdie putt on the 9th hole, her final hole of the day, to finish with a two-under 70 for the round and 3-under 285 for the four rounds.
  • Her putt also assured the Spartans of a spot in the eight-team match play beginning Tuesday morning. The team will face second-seed Oregon beginning at 6:20 a.m.
  • Oon is the first Spartan to finish in the top-five since 1997 when Janice Moodie finished second at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
  • Oon is 2-for-2 in top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships after finishing ninth at the 2019 NCAA Championships, shooting 79-71-72-222 in the shortened championship.
  • The Spartans finished the day with a five-over 293 and finished +29 for the four rounds, one shot ahead of Georgia and two shots behind Florida State.
  • San José State advances to match play for the first time in school history. The Spartans play second-seed Oregon in the quarterfinals. The winner of the match will play the Texas A&M/Florida State winner Tuesday afternoon.
  • The Spartans needed every shot on Monday to advance.
  • Kajsa Arwefjäll shot a 2-over 74 and finished tied for 27th at 7-over 295. She started the day with a birdie on her first hole, No. 10. She made back-to-back bogeys before making six consecutive pars to finish +2 over her first nine holes.
  • Arwefjäll made a bogey on her 10th hole and then made eight consecutive pars to finish her round including a clutch par on #9.
  • Lucia Lopez Ortega shot a 3-over 75 and finished tied for 57th at +13. She was two-under for her first nine holes before running into a few stumbling blocks over her final nine holes.
  • Louisa Carlbom shot a 5-over 77 and finished tied for 63rd at +15.
  • The Spartans led the field in eagles made with five as Carlbom recorded her second eagle of the tournament on Monday. She again came close to an albatross, this time on the par-5, 474-yard 7th hole, leaving her with an easy eagle putt.
  • Antonia Malate shot her best round of the championships with a 2-over 74 and finished tied for 74th at +22. She began the clutch putting on the ninth hole as she made a birdie to stabilize the Spartans in the top-eight. Malate ended the day with four birdies made.

The Spartans are one of the eight teams after tomorrow’s play to head into match play on Tuesday for a chance at a team national championship.
