Two-time Major League Baseball All-Star and two-time defending champion Mark Mulder leads a group of 16 former standout MLB players competing in the American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament, July 14-16 in Lake Tahoe. (www.americancenturychampionship.com)
The former star pitcher for the Oakland A’s and California Angels is seeking an unprecedented third straight title in celebrity golf’s premier event. Mulder edged former tennis star Mardy Fish last year and topped fellow MLB Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne in 2015. He has finished in the Top 10 the past five years. Now a TV game analyst for the A’s, Mulder also won the Diamond Resorts Invitational celebrity tournament in January.
Mulder will be joined by five Hall of Famers: John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Ozzie Smith and 2017 inductee Iván “Pudge” Rodríguez – in the field of 90 sports and entertainment stars competing on live national television via NBCSN and NBC Sports that weekend.
Now in its 28th year, the tournament offers a purse of $600,000, while raising money for local and national charities. A 54-hole modified Stableford format will test a field that also includes former MLB greats Trevor Hoffman, Derek Lowe, Josh Beckett, Roger Clemens, Kenny Lofton, Bret Saberhagen, David Wells, Kevin Millar, Joe Carter and Tim Wakefield. The event, which has raised over $4 million for charity, has been held at picturesque Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course, a Golf Digest Top 100 ranked course, since its inception in 1990.
