INDIAN WELLS—It takes a person who loves triple-digit temperatures to head anywhere in the Coachella Valley during the summer months.
It’s a time that cries out for early morning tee times and getting off the course well before high noon. Several years ago, we took advantage of a special offer to spend four nights in early May. Our tee time was just after 6 a.m. and we were delighted to finish well before 10 a.m. We headed for the first showing at a local movie theater of Tommy’s Honour, the story of Old Tom Morris and his son. By noon, we were seated in the shade at an outdoor restaurant with its misters going full blast.
The golf team at Indian Wells has recognized the summer challenge and added misters to its golf carts for summer rounds on its Celebrity course. The other course on site, the Players, is closed for redesign.
In addition to the welcome misters, wet, mango-flavored towels are available at the turn and finishing the round will reward players with a welcome popsicle.
It’s bargain summer rates season so check it out if you’re headed for the desert.
