The PGA Tour is coming back to the Napa Valley – well, for at least 2027.
The PGA Tour announced July 28 a sponsorship deal with Sompo, a public company that offers property, casualty, and specialty insurance and reinsurance solutions worldwide.
The deal includes a PGA Tour stop in Napa at the Silverado Resort for 2027. Starting in 2028, Sompo will be a sponsor of a PGA Tour Championship Series event.
The tournament will be on July 26-Aug. 1 which will come before the playoffs next year.
The Sompo event will evolve into a Championship Series event at a market that will be announced later.
“Just a few weeks after we announced our new competitive model, we are delighted to welcome Sompo as the first new sponsor supporting the PGA Tour Championship Series that will launch in 2028,” said Dhruv Prasad, the PGA Tour chief commercial officer said in a release from the PGA Tour. “We look forward to debuting this partnership in Napa in 2027 and are excited to announce its future home in a new market for the PGA Tour in the coming months.”
What happens to the Tour event Napa in 2028? The Sompo event may not even end up in California. My guess is that between the Tour and the team that runs the tournament at Silverado will be searching for a sponsor.
The course and the community deserve a PGA Tour event. The beauty of the region and the world-class wine region make it one of the more attractive events for the pro golfers, well certainly for their families.
I really feel like the PGA Tour is moving in the right direction and establishing the Championship Series – 23-24 events featuring the top pros each year.
This gives the public what they want, seeing the top players competing against each other more often.
What else the Tour needs to help find a sponsor and keep a tournament in Napa.
A world class location deserves a world class tournament.
