When toe meets leather Thursday Night in Philadelphia to kickoff the 2018 NFL regular season, millions of fans across America (and the world) will resume a romance with their favorite sports passion. While Baseball is still sentimentally referred to as “America’s Pastime,” most of us realize football has long since taken over as King of the sports landscape.
And with recent legislation passed legalizing sports wagering in several East Coast states — joining what had been a Nevada monopoly on the (legal) market — more people than ever will be able to enjoy a football game with a bit of money wagered on the outcome. Most will lose, of course, which is exactly why the government wants a piece of the pie that local bookies had been hoarding for decades back East.
But if you want to give yourself the absolute best chance at WINNING this season, you’ve come to the right place! Kent Elola Sports had a record-breaking 2017 NFL regular season, hitting at an amazing 70% clip Against The Spread (ATS) that would matchup favorably with just about any “expert” in the industry. When we look at the overall league coming into the 2018 season it appears to be a wide open battle for the Lombardi Trophy yet again. While the New England Patriots are +700 (7-to-1) favorites at most sports books to win the Super Bowl, a group of NINE teams sit at anywhere from 10-to-1 to 20-to-1 (the Rams, Vikings, Eagles, Steelers, Packers, Saints, Falcons, Jaguars and Chargers).
As always a romp to the NFL championship will require a run of good play and good fortune on the injury front. Of course the Eagles showed us last year that even some major injuries can be overcome. How many of you thought Philadelphia’s season was over the minute MVP candidate quarterback Carson Wentz tore up his knee that early December afternoon against the Rams in Los Angeles?
The Eagles reveled in proving the doubters wrong week after week in the postseason, as they went on an amazing run of wins as outright underdogs against Atlanta, Minnesota and then of course the Patriots in the Super Bowl, with backup quarterback Nick Foles being named the game’s MVP. It will be Foles back under center Thursday as the Eagles open up their title defense against visiting Atlanta as Wentz continues to recover from his serious knee injury.
Can Foles reclaim his postseason magic? Will the Falcons steal the early NFC lead with an Opening Night win? We have your answers and the ENTIRE Week 1 lineup ready to go. Just call/text Kent Elola at 510-209-0730 to get on board and cash in all season long with King Kent, the best football handicapper around! The free picks are nice, but if you want to make REAL MONEY you need to get the King’s absolute top selections by calling or texting now.
Your free pick for Week 1 is the OVER 51 in the Patriots-Texans game. Don’t worry about New England’s slow preseason. Tom Brady will be ready to roll once the games count. And Deshaun Watson is healthy again for the Texans. He put a real scare into the Pats last September with New England coming out ahead, barely, 36-33. Look for another wild shootout Sunday in Foxborough with the OVER coming in comfortably.
As for the rest of the teams, here’s a quick look at how King Kent sees each division breaking down going into the 2018 regular season:
AFC East: The Patriots yearly waltz to a division crown doesn’t seem any more difficult than usual this season. I’m not sold on Josh Allen in Buffalo. I think Sam Darnold will eventually be good with the New York Jets but, with the limited talent around him, it won’t show much this year. Miami continues to flounder in its perpetual 7-9 to 9-7 range.
AFC North: The Browns will certainly be more interesting as Baker Mayfield pushes to become the starting QB (and probably will be by midseason). The Bengals will show up and surprise a team now and then (like knocking the Ravens out of the playoffs in Week 17 of last year). Baltimore will be better if it stays healthy on defense and Joe Flacco has a bounce-back year. But, in the end, this is Pittsburgh’s division to rule. Of course regular season success doesn’t mean much in Pittsburgh anymore. The Steelers need to make a deep January run for the first time in recent memory to please their Terrible Towel waving fans.
AFC South: The division that used to be the laughing stock of the league is suddenly quite competitive. Jacksonville reached the AFC title game with defense and a fierce running game and nearly knocked off the Patriots. Houston looked a real threat until Watson’s season-ending injury and he is back at full strength now (as is J.J. Watt). Tennessee won a road playoff game which many probably don’t remember, while the Colts are getting back Andrew Luck, hopefully near 100% of what he used to be. I’ll go with the Texans to come out on top in this division, earning double-digit wins as long as Watson is starting behind center.
AFC West: I can see this division going either way as far as being one of the league’s best or worst. Question marks all over for these four teams. Is Jon Gruden really the savior in Oakland or a silly (and vastly overpaid) retread hire by owner Mark Davis? Does the trading of their best defensive player (Khalil Mack) for future first-round draft picks indicate the Raiders are more worried about being good in a couple years when they move to Las Vegas than they are this season? Can the Los Angeles Chargers finally stay (relatively) healthy and start a season off without burying themselves by the end of September? Can Patrick Mahomes’ massive arm and the tremendous Kansas City skill players around him make up for his lack of NFL experience? And will Case Keenum be able to lead a defensive-minded Denver team into the playoffs like he did Minnesota last season? Any one of these four could go 11-5 and take the division (or 5-11 and finish last). Give me the Chargers to come out on top of the West in the end.
NFC East: The glamour division that the NFL loves to showcase is back with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles being the only returning playoff team from a year ago. While the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Washington Redskins all seek a return to glory, the Eagles remain the most talented roster in the division — if not the league — especially once Wentz returns. Alex Smith will be and upgrade for the Redskins at QB and Saquon Barkley should solidify the Giants’ running game, but it’s the Cowboys who should be in contention for a Wild Card spot if they can find some receivers for Dak Prescott to throw to. Philadelphia wins the East again and could be poised for another Super Bowl title run.
NFC North: I found it interesting that the oddsmakers have Minnesota as the favorites to win this division. I think Minnesota’s chance to win a Super Bowl (at home, no less) came and went last January when they got crushed against a backup QB in the NFC title game. Kirk Cousins may be an improvement over Keenum for the Vikings at QB, but as long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy the Green Bay Packers will be my pick to win this division. The Detroit Lions are usually fun to watch but face a horrendously difficult schedule this year and the Chicago Bears are still rebuilding with second-year QB Mitchell Trubisky.
NFC South: I think this is the best division in football. The New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers are all legitimate Super Bowl contenders heading into the regular season. And then there’s the Tampa Bay Bucs. Even without QB Jameis Winston being suspended for the first three games of the regular season, the Bucs were going to be hard-pressed to make any noise in the South. You may not realize that two of the past three league MVPs play quarterback in this division and neither one of them is named Drew Brees! With Brees, Cam Newton and Matt Ryan calling the shots, this division is loaded and the winner will need at least 11 wins. My preseason guess would be Saints by a nose over the other two contenders.
NFC West: Out here in the Bay Area Jimmy G mania is going full force. After winning their final 5 regular season games last year, the San Francisco 49ers have high hopes entering 2018. Jimmy Garoppolo will surely make things more exciting but the Niners may still be a year or two away from real playoff contention in the loaded NFC. The Los Angeles Rams should again be the class of this division and will look for a better postseason performance than last year’s one-and-done home loss to Atlanta. Arizona is mired with an oft-injured (Sam Bradford) and potentially overrated (Josh Rosen) QB situation, while the Seattle Seahawks will rely more on Russell Wilson than ever before. If Wilson is able to stay upright for the entire season, it might take an MVP-like performance to even reach 8-8 with this Seattle team. The Rams take the division, with the 49ers grabbing second.
AFC playoff teams: Patriots, Steelers, Texans, Chargers, Chiefs (wc), Jags (wc)
NFC playoffs teams: Eagles, Packers, Saints, Rams, Falcons (wc), Panthers (wc)
AFC Championship Game: Steelers 30, Patriots 24
NFC Championship Game: Eagles 31, Rams 27
Super Bowl 53: Eagles 46, Steelers 20
