Three Cal Bears Tabbed as All-America Scholars

Three California men’s golfers were recognized as 2022-23 All-America Scholars by the Golf Coaches Association of America on Wednesday.

Rising seniors Aaron Du and Sampson Zheng earned their second consecutive All-America scholar nods while Simon Kwon – a rising junior who transferred away from Cal following the conclusion of the 2022-23 season – received the honor for the first time in his career.

Du (public health major), Kwon (undeclared) and Zheng (economics) all played in at least nine stroke-play tournaments for the Bears in 2022-23 and were in Cal’s lineup at the NCAA Morgan Hill Regional and Pac-12 Championships. The trio was additionally selected to the 2023 Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll in July.

To be eligible for GCAA NCAA Division I All-America Scholar nomination, an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior both academically and athletically while maintaining a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2. Nominees also must have participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitive rounds while maintaining a stroke average under 76.00, and must be of high moral character and be in good standing at their institution.

In each of Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men’s Golf Walter Chun’s seven seasons at the program’s helm, the Bears have had at least one student-athlete selected as a GCAA All-America Scholar, as well as three in each of the past two years.
