Ski resorts and skiers celebrated the heavy rains last week that fell throughout Northern California, but more of the white stuff is necessary to kick the season into high gear.
Last week’s warm storm resulted in rain at lake level around Lake Tahoe with heavy snow falling higher up the mountains. The result is most resorts, either through natural snow or snow-making, have are not opened for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Current reports show only Boreal (which opened a couple of weeks ago), Heavenly Valley at South Shore and Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows outside of Truckee open for the long weekend. All are in limited operation.
The weather pattern this week—unseasonably warm throughout California—is great for Thanksgiving weekend golfers, but the opposite for those desiring to schuss down the mountains. The weather forecast has rain and snow returning on Sunday after three 70-degree days this week.
So, take the old skis and be prepared for early season conditions if you’re headed for the mountains.
For those with golf in mind—enjoy. Great November weather throughout California—SoCal temps hit the 90s Wednesday and that is expected to hit remain there until at least Friday. As the friend I was chatting on the phone said, “It’s Arizona Thanksgiving in Carlsbad.”
